The upright row is a fairly common exercise that people do for shoulders. To execute this particular exercise, you have to internally rotate your shoulders, add weight and pull the weight up towards your chin. The issue with this, is that when you do it, you are reducing space in your shoulder joint and causing the supraspinatus tendon to get repeatedly crushed under the subacromial arch. Repeatedly making these movements can cause any of the following; shoulder pain, tears in your rotator cuff, shoulder impingement, frozen shoulder and bursitis.
If you would prefer to keep doing this but would like to minimize the risk, try to keep your hands higher than your shoulder and elbows. There is a large variety of other shoulder exercises you can check out that are much better if you’d like to lower your risk of injury.
